Recreational Craft and Components

With reference to Directive 2013/53/EU, Istituto Giordano issues conformity documentation for recreational craft of hull length from 2.5 to 24 metres, personal watercraft and the components listed in Annex II therein.

Directive 2013/53/EU is modular i.e. it uses different assessment procedures that are known as “Modules”.

Definitions:
  • Watercraft: any recreational craft or personal watercraft;
  • Recreational craft: means any watercraft of any type, excluding personal watercraft, intended for sports and leisure purposes of hull length from 2.5m to 24m, regardless of the means of propulsion;
  • Personal watercraft, means watercraft intended for sports and leisure purposes of less than 4m in hull length which uses a propulsion engine having a water jet pump as its primary source of propulsion and is designed to be operated by a person or persons sitting, standing or kneeling on, rather than within the confines of, a hull; 
  • DoC: EU Declaration of Conformity stating that the watercraft fulfils the essential requirements specified by Directive 2013/53/EU. The DoC shall be drawn up and signed by the Manufacturer or its Authorised Representative established within the European Union or the person responsible for putting it into service (PCA – Post-Construction Assessment)
  • Components:
    - Ignition-protected equipment for inboard and stern drive petrol engines and petrol tank spaces;
    - Start-in-gear protection devices for outboard engines;
    - Steering wheels, steering mechanisms and cable assemblies;
    - Fuel tanks intended for fixed installations and fuel hoses;
    - Prefabricated hatches and port lights.

Conformity Documents issued by Istituto Giordano: Type and Validity

The issue and continuing validity of conformity documents is subject to passing the Applicant’s chosen modular conformity assessment procedures (Modules).

For each applicable Module, the respective conformity documents are specified along with the procedures for issue and maintaining validity; identification of conformity documents issued and their validity are set out in the following table:
