Certification in accordance with the European Directive 96/98/EC on Marine Equipment (as amended by 2010/68/EU) is required for the equipment to be placed on board a European Community ship, but the same kind of testing is needed in general for equipment to be used on ships covered by the SOLAS International Convention.
In force of the agreement between the European Community and the United States of America several products which have been assessed according to the MED Directive can be given also a number valid for the USCG (US Coast Guard) approval in the United States.
Istituto Giordano S.p.A. is a Notified Body to issue certification for Marine Equipment materials and/or products for use on board ships in accordance with Directive 96/98/EC on Marine Equipment as amended, SOLAS Convention and applicable IMO regulations. Istituto Giordano S.p.A. has its own in-house Laboratories for product conformity testing. Testing programs shall also be done at the place of production, with the presence of Istituto Giordano staff or by recognition of local laboratories, when the conditions occur.
